William Gear, RA (1915-1997)

Born in Scotland and educated in Edinburgh. He studied in Paris under Fernand Léger and stayed in France until 1950. An abstract painter, Gear made a significant contribution to European painting through his association with the COBRA group. Retrospectives were held at the Redfern Gallery in 1997 and 2003.
