Barns-Graham was one of the foremost painters working in St Ives after 1940. From 1960 she divided her time between her homes in St Ives and St Andrews, affirming herself as much a Scottish as Cornish artist.

Her work is concerned with precision and the ordering of shapes and colour. It employs hard edged geometric and linear forms, always in motion across the surface.
