Josef Herman, RA (1911-2000)

Herman was a Polish artist who moved to Britain in 1940. In the 40s he lived in the Welsh mining village of Ystradgynlais where he found inspiration and later fame from depicting the everyday tasks being completed around him. In 1953 he returned to London but continued to travel widely maintaining an interest in miners but also including fishermen and farm workers. His characteristic style has long been admired and his work has been widely exhibited.
